ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

Water for people and forest

The Hummingbird Initiative has connected Mwomwere School to a sustainable water source while protecting the surrounding ecosystem that makes this water possible.

The project combines water infrastructure, environmental restoration, WASH education, and climate-smart agriculture to create long-term benefits for both people and nature.

This quarter, the team secured the necessary permits, completed the water intake construction, and finished 2.7 kilometers of trenching to connect the water source to the school.

Protect the source

Protect and sustainably manage the natural water source through intake construction and vegetation restoration.

Having access to water in our school has made a big difference in our daily lives. We now have enough water to clean our classrooms, cook our meals, and drink. The water enables us to water the vegetables in our school farm. These vegetables improve our meals and help us have a more balanced diet.

The impact of the project has been life changing for the 237 pupils and 16 teachers, with water now flowing freely in the newly constructed toilet blocks improving health, hygiene and sanitation for the school communty.
