Conservation you can taste

ASRI is helping communities transform mangrove conservation into a source of sustainable income through mangrove syrup production.

Working alongside the local Tourism Awareness Group (POKDARWIS Anak Kaki Gunung Sembilan) and with contributions from Gunung Sembilan Village Government, the project provides training, equipment, and technical support to develop a community-led mangrove syrup enterprise.

The past months, the team conducted stakeholder consultations, community outreach sessions, and group strengthening activities to prepare for training and future production.

Key Strategic Priorities

Manage mangroves

Promote community-based sustainable management of mangrove ecosystems in Gunung Sembilan Village.

Build the enterprise

Develop mangrove syrup production as a viable source of alternative income, building capacity among women and youth in product processing, packaging, and marketing.

Sustain the coast

Increase community awareness of the economic and ecological importance of mangrove conservation, strengthening coastal community resilience through conservation-based livelihoods.

Communities for Nature's support has allowed the ASRI team to work directly on community empowerment — right in the gap left by other grants. Even as seed funding, its impact is tangible: I'm writing this while enjoying mangrove syrup made by the very community that grew thanks to CFN's support. We also deeply appreciate how enthusiastically CFN shares and communicates the story of this collaboration.

Through this project, we are given the opportunity to develop mangroves into a product that has economic value for our area. We hope that we continue to develop mangroves into valuable products so that it can become the source of people's income. We are motivated to protect and preserve the mangroves that have become a source of life.
