Funding Community-Led Action

The Green Spark Fund supports grassroots organisations and community groups working to protect nature, strengthen communities, and create lasting local impact.

We believe that some of the most effective solutions to environmental and social challenges come from the people closest to them. The Green Spark Fund exists to provide small grants, practical support, and a platform for community-led ideas to grow and thrive.

Since launching, the Fund has supported projects across multiple countries, helping communities restore ecosystems, improve livelihoods, empower women and young people, strengthen food security, and build resilience for the future.

Before you apply

We encourage applicants to carefully review the eligibility criteria and application guidance before submitting a proposal.

Projects do not need to be large to make a difference. We are looking for passionate community-led initiatives with a clear vision, local ownership, and the potential to create meaningful impact.

Who Can Apply?

We welcome applications from:

Community-based organisations

Local charities and non-profits

Environmental and conservation groups

Indigenous and local community organisations

Youth-led initiatives

Women's groups and cooperatives

Social enterprises with community and environmental impact

Projects should demonstrate strong community involvement and deliver positive environmental and/or social outcomes.

What We Fund

We are particularly interested in projects that contribute to one or more of the following areas.

Nature & Ecosystem Restoration

Projects that protect, restore, or sustainably manage natural environments.

Sustainable Livelihoods

Initiatives that create income-generating opportunities linked to sustainability.

Women & Girls

Projects that empower women and girls through leadership and enterprise.

Youth Leadership & Education

Programmes that engage young people in environmental action and conservation.

Climate Resilience & Wellbeing

Projects that help communities adapt and strengthen local capacity.

What We Look For

Successful applications typically demonstrate:

Strong community ownership and participation

Clear environmental and/or social impact

Practical and achievable activities

Sustainable outcomes beyond the funding period

Potential to inspire learning and wider community engagement

A clear and realistic budget for the funding requested

We know that many local and community-based groups are already doing powerful work to protect nature, restore ecosystems, and lead inclusive environmental action. But we also know that getting funding—especially for small or informal groups—can be difficult. That’s where this small but catalytic funding comes in.

Communities for Nature (CfN) Green Spark Fund is here to support emerging, underrepresented, or grassroots groups who are leading efforts for people and the planet. You don’t need to be a registered organisation or have years of experience—if you have a strong idea, a clear connection to your community, and the drive to make a difference, we want to hear from you.

If you are already a CfN partner looking to deliver projects with your community, or if you are part of a community that one of our partners works with and would like to apply directly, this Fund is for you.

Through small but meaningful grants, this programme aims to:

  • Help you carry out projects that respond to real needs and priorities in your community
  • Strengthen your group’s ability to organise and lead
  • Build your confidence and track record to access future funding

These grants are meant as a boost to help get your ideas off the ground or take your work to the next level. We aim to meet you where you are, offering trust-based, flexible support that honours your vision.
